"I only started reading this because I left my actual current fantasy chonker at my parents' place. I barely remember Anomander Rake from Gardens of the Moon, and he seems to be the only thing people coming to this book in 2012 cared about, so I can only hope it stands alone well enough. I'm sure the hell not going to reread Gardens to refresh my memory." — Nov 01, 2026 06:42AM

"Listening to maybe ten minutes of this (if that) while winding down for bed means it's going very, very slowly. At first it felt silly for Cat and others to constantly be explaining the world-building to each other as they go along, but it's been fun now that I'm used to it. It's just the way people communicate with each other in this setting, I guess!" — Mar 04, 2026 06:37AM

It’s a business where each candle on a birthday cake becomes a nail in the coffin to a female star.

“When politicians start talking about large groups of their fellow Americans as 'enemies,' it's time for a quiet stir of alertness. Polarizing people is a good way to win an election, and also a good way to wreck a country.”
