I’ve done my own scouring of theological and philosophical texts, and while I learned many fascinating things from my studies, unfortunately the meaning of existence wasn’t one of them. I may just not have been cut out for it. The questions and answers that have always drawn me in most strongly are the ones that can be answered with scientific observation, mathematics, and physical evidence. As appealing as it sometimes seemed to have the whole story and meaning of life written down for me once and for all in a book, I knew I would only ever really be able to accept the kind of truth I could rederive mathematically.”

તમારું નામ નઈ, આતા, આ સું વાવ્યું છ ઈ પૂછે છ." કહેતી એક કાળી, નમણી યૂવતી ઝૂંપડી પાછળથી આ તરફ આવતા બોલી "ભાભો ઓછું સાભળે છ."
"ઓ... હો... હો.." કરતો ડોસો હસી પડ્યો "બંટી વાવી છ. બંટી કેવાય આને. ને ઓલા વાંહેલા પડામાં બાવટો નાખ્યો છ. અમારે આંય આવું જ ઊગે. બીજું ધાન નો ઊગે."

આ વનસ્પતિને જોતાં જ સમજાઈ જાય છે કે જે કંઈ પણ હોય, તે કનિષ્ઠ પ્રકારનું છે. આવું અનાજ અને ભાંભરું પાણી, સખત મહેનત, ભીષણ દારિદ્રય સદાકાળ અભાવની વચ્ચે જીવતી આખી એક પ્રજા. ના, ના, પ્રજા માત્ર જીવતી નથી, જીવંત પ્રજા છે. જેને મળો તે કહે છે, "હાકલા છે બાપા."

ક્યાંથી આવે છે આ ખુમારીભર્યો ઉત્તર? ક્યાંથી શીખવા મ[યું છે આવું દીનતારિહત જીવવાનું? મારા અત્યાર સુધીના આ વનવાસે મને સમજાવ્યું છે કે પ્રકૃિત જીવન ટકાવે તો છે જ. પણ તેના સતત સંસર્ગે રહેનારને તો તે જીવન જીવતા પણ શીખવાડે છે.”
