Felicity is without a doubt the best character in this. Percy is just a cinnamon roll, I loved him.

Felicity is without a doubt the best character in this. Percy is just a cinnamon roll, I loved him.
But I had my problems with Monty, because he's the exact opposite of what I am, so I couln't relate to him at all. And while his character grew while the story progressed he was annoying for a big part of the story. I have never read about anyone who was so oblivious about his own privileges. And it doesn't matter, that he wasn't happy despite his privileges. That was actually really understandable considering how his father treated him. I'm not saying he should just be sastisfied with his life, because he's privileged. What really bothered me was that his privileges stared him in the face in the form of Felicity (a woman) and Percy (a coloured man) and he couldn't see them. Not even when Percy and Felicity tried to explain. And while he may have overcome his ego a little by the end, I don't think he truly realized his privileges even towards the end. But he started to understand (like the time he realized "At least you'll never have to run an estate" was a poor response to Percy having epilepsy). As I understand it he's just a secondary character in the next book (yey Felicity) but I hope to see that development progress, because I think don't think there was enough of it in this book. What also annoyed me was how he always thought Percy didn't feel anything for him. He misinterpreted things that I didn't think COULD be misinterpreted. He wasn't the brightest. His response to his father beating him (drinking, sex and gambling) was actually well done. It started out as him just constantly partying and then finding out it's mostly a coping mechanism, at least the alcohol. And he was clearly an alcoholic, considering his remarks to the lack of alcohol when they were on the run. I loved the scene when he was basically just poisoned but cried because Helena slapping him reminded him of his father. That was a really great scene.

So I loved the storyline, Percy and Felicity and seeing Monty grow a little as a person, but Monty was still so annoying, that threw me a little off. And I always thought Percy was too good for him, until I finally felt them towards the end. I loved the chapter where Percy finally told him everything he had on his mind, since Monty thought he was doing everything for Percy, but really he did it for himself. And how, for the first time, he saw what Percy meant. ...more "
