Nicole has strived her whole life to be the most unflawed girl in pageant history. To the girls, the island seems very mysterious. There are many furtive events that occur that they just can’t explain. Consequently, there might be something on the island other that a group of helpless girls. Beauty Queens is an advanced novel intended for girls who love romance, action, comedy and mystery.

In Beauty Queens the main topic is how perfect, civilized, female teenagers turn into wild animals and act the exact opposite of what they were taught their whole lives to portray. When they arrive at the island they act very lady like and do as they are told because to them, there’s no other way of living! However, slowly civilization is out of their reach and the inner savage comes out. I thought that the idea of these perfect social creatures turning into wild girls was very funny and made this novel a very comical story.

Overall I thought this book was amazing. It had every twist and turn that any good book should have. It was quit incredible how Libba Bray could include so many different genres into 400 pages! This book literally had everything; from leader rivalry, dreamy pirates swooping in, and murdering snakes with bombs. In Beauty Queens there is always a conflict that just keeps you turning the page. I thought the most striking part of this book was when the girls would find out something about themselves by actually doing what they love instead of pageantry. When Tiara, the innocent, simple character, stops doing the pageant routine, she discovers how complex her feelings are and how much she hates doing pageants. It’s these kinds of moments that make you realize the depth in this book and how it’s not just about a bunch of silly pageant girls.

What surprised me so much when I read this book was how relatable it is to Lord Of the Flies. The themes in these novels were both about how being away from civilization lets your inner savage come out. You could almost call Beauty Queens a modern day Lord of the Flies but with girls. This story can appeal to many different audiences. In my opinion even boys will like it. It is filled with action packed scenes and secret agents and so much mystery! It would also attract to of course, girl teenagers. This book has romance, comedy, and depth, which is the perfect combination for any adolescent. In the end, this book would really be perfect for anybody and I suggest to all, that they should experience this remarkable novel. ...more "

After enduring many difficulties with her family, including her brother becoming violent, she is sent off to boarding school to focus on her future, swimming, and getting away from the family life. When Katie arrives at the school she meets her “different” roommate Mazzie and quickly adjusts to the “it” crowd. Fearing that all her new friends will judge her for the real truth of why she was sent of to boarding school, she lies about her brother and tells everyone that he is dead. This novel is intended for advanced readers that can be exposed to drug and alcohol abuse.

I thought that Jessica Warman’s Breathless was a pretty good book but was hard to read at times. When Katie’s older, schizophrenic brother, named Will, starts to become violent and out of control, it really touched my heart and I felt bad for the Kitrell family. Even though Will isn’t a main character the conflict that he induces because a core topic. I think that sending Katie away when her brother’s mental disorder started to get worse was a good idea. If the issue really got out of hand Will could have really hurt her. The main focus of the story is Katie and how she adjusts to boarding school life. When she promises to herself to tell no one of her brother and his mental disease, it leads to many emotional conflicts and difficulties. I think that this pressing issue was really cruel for Katie’s emotional stability. The author, Jessica Warman did an extremely good job in explaining every situation and struggle in the book.

This novel was very enticing. Every page wanted you to keep to keep on reading to find out what happens to Katie in the end. Whenever Katie would swim in the water in was an incredible experience for the reader. Her mind would be clear and focused and she would let go of all her problems go. Breathless also had a really enjoyable plot. The story was very intriguing. The character Mazzie, and the relationship that Katie had with her was something very interesting about the book. Mazzie was the one girl who understood Katie and her stresses and worries. She was someone that Katie could always trust and know that she would be there for her no matter what.

Jessica Warman additionally did a very nice job of making the book relatable. Any girl who has had boy, family, or pressuring problems can relate to this novel. The theme of this book, in my opinion, is to do what makes you happy. Throughout Breathless Katie always is the happiest when she is doing something she likes like swimming or being with her brother. Katie also is an inspiration to keep trying your hardest in school and sports. Even though she was in the “it” crowd she new her priorities and didn’t get carried away. Overall this book was very pleasing and most teenage girls will enjoy reading it. ...more "
