Let’s start with Vanesa: sultry, confident, and unapologetically herself, even as she wrestles with feeling unseen and underappreciated. Watching her evolve into a full-on bad-a** b*tch? Perfection. And Enzo? Swoon. He’s not just a love interest—he’s a co-conspirator in her empowerment. The man literally brought her "gifts" (read: torture subjects) like a love language. If that doesn’t scream romance, I don’t know what does.

Vanesa’s hobbies? Utterly unique. I mean, who else can say their idea of self-care includes witchcraft, crystals, poisons, and... a little light torture? (Don’t @ me; I love her for it.) She’s a modern-day femme fatale with layers, and Enzo is the perfect match with his own depth and complexities. Unlike some romances where only one main character feels fleshed out, these two were equally vibrant, their chemistry sizzling with every interaction.

Speaking of chemistry: the slow burn, forbidden love, and delicious tension between Vanesa and Enzo had me living for every stolen glance and longing-filled moment. His engagement to her cousin Aria added a spicy twist that made their connection even more forbidden and delectable. When I say the tension was palpable, I mean I could feel it through the pages. Every. Single. Scene.

The side characters deserve a shout-out too. Some I adored; others I loved to hate. Emily crafted every single one with intention, making the entire cast unforgettable. And the twists! Oh, the twists. Some I saw coming, some blindsided me, but all were pure brilliance.

Let’s talk about the Little Mermaid inspiration—it’s there in the faintest whispers, but this is no fairy tale. It’s an edgy, dark romance with only the bones of the original story. Emily spun those bones into an entirely unique, addictive narrative that’s entirely her own.

And the phrases! "In a different life…" and "Love me/you out loud…" These lines are etched into my heart forever.

Emily McIntire is a QUEEN. No, scratch that. She’s a deity of dark romance. This series will forever hold a top spot on my bookshelf, and Hexed is the crowning jewel. I. ATE. THIS. BOOK. UP.
