“I want you. Only you. The devil knows why.”

-I love a man obsessed, and my goodness, Sebastian is OBSESSED with Evie. Going into this book, I knew it was the fan favorite of the series; the expectations were sky high. But it met them, and in many ways exceeded them. There are so many tropes in this book that are universally loved by all romance readers: guy falls first, possessive MMC, “she’s MINE”, “that’s my wife”, marriage of convenience, reformed bad boy, opposites attract, etc. When I tell you I ate up this story, I mean I was well fed.

-Readers have a better understanding of Annabelle, Lillian, and Daisy prior to this book. Evie is a bit of a mystery. She has a very controlling and abusive family, often she will be written out of scenes due to her circumstances. I think leading up to “The Devil in Winter” I didn’t realize how dire her situation was, but it quickly becomes obvious that marrying Sebastian in a marriage of convenience arrangement, is her only viable option. Of course, Sebastian is desperate to get out of his circumstances as well, and he quickly agrees to this arrangement.

-I loved how Sebastian’s attraction and fixation on Evie happens immediately. Once he talks to her and really gets a good look at her, he’s left wondering why he didn’t do it in the first place. She fulfills so many of his desires, but also compliments his personality so well. But it’s like that for her, too. Evie takes care of Sebastian when he needs it, and Sebastian takes care of Evie.

-There is a fantastic hurt/comfort story arc in this book during the rising action, and it makes the climax of the story all the more enjoyable. The stakes were high before, but after what happens between Sebastian and Evie, they’re even more high.

-Sebastian has a womanizing reputation, and a legendary skill set in the bedroom. Finally readers are able to see Sebastian in…ahem…action. He doesn’t disappoint, that’s for sure. I really loved how obsessed he was with sleeping with Evie, and how she set the rules for their relationship in the bedroom.

-There’s a different tone compared to the previous two books, and we see more interactions between the MCs due to their unique obstacles. Instead of going to balls and parties, Sebastian and Evie are at her father’s gaming club. And instead of having scenes where the MCs interact, then retreat, then interact again, it seems that there is more content where Sebastian and Evie are forced to face each other, communicate, and work alongside one another.

-Overall, I greatly enjoyed this book. It’s probably my favorite in the series, just because I loved the dynamic between the MCs so much. It’s worth the hype, I can’t recommend it enough to all romance readers. I truly think this is a story that readers who are hesitant to read historical romances, will in fact find entertaining. My love for this series continues, and I’m excited to read Daisy’s book next! ...more "

“Learn everything. Fill your mind with knowledge—it’s the only kind of power no one can take away from you.” Hansu never told him to study, but rather to learn, and it occurred to Noa that there was a marked difference. Learning was like playing, not labor.”
