-When I posted on Instagram that I was currently reading “Lord of Scoundrels”, I had so many people DM me singing its praises. And they were all spot on: this is an incredible book! It was published in 1995, so there are some moments that made me go “eh, I’m going to let that slide…”. But despite those instances, I still really enjoyed the story and characters.

-The book opens with a lengthy prologue giving readers the backstory of Dain, the MMC. It sets the book up perfectly. We have a clear idea of who Dain is, what he looks like, why his appearance is important to the plot, his motivations, his weaknesses, his unspoken desires, etc. I struggle to think of another book that presents its main character in a similar way, it felt very unique.

-Jessica, the FMC, is one of the most dominant female leads I’ve ever read about in a romance novel. She knows what she wants (to be with Dain), and she goes after it in such an efficient and successful way. I think what I loved the most was her possessiveness of Dain. There are so many romance novels with the MMC being possessive, and saying “mine” about the FMC. But it’s Jessica who says “mine”! And she’s so proud to be with Dain; her love and dedication is wonderful to read about.

-There’s a ton of sensuality in this story. Whenever Jessica and Dain kiss it’s incredibly passionate, their attraction is so powerful. There are times where I want to shake Dain and say “she’s right there! Enjoying this! It’s ok for you to let go and enjoy it too!”, but that’s all part of his complex character arc.

-Dain is complicated. He talks a big game, and is really good at pushing people away. He constantly keeps a protective layer between himself and Jessica in the form of drinking, prostitutes, harsh language, and questionable friends. He’s a difficult MMC to like, but despite his efforts to dissuade Jessica, I still found myself liking him, and I think that’s due to the strong prologue. Readers can immediately see through this facade, and know not to take what he says seriously; it’s all a defense mechanism.

-This is a must-read for historical romance readers, or for anyone who enjoys a strong FMC. If you can set aside any qualms about Dain’s behavior, and look past some outdated verbiage used by the author, this is an easy book to enjoy. ...more "
