If you want to read a book that will keep you on your toes, feeling emotional, scared or laughing, “IT”, By Stephen King, is the book for you. Stephen King did what he does best and created a terrifying book about a group of kids going through childhood in their small, haunted town of Derry. All of our childhood fears come alive in “IT” and, well, I was still a big scared.
A huge reason why “IT” was such a successful horror story was because Stephen King was behind it. Stephen King was born on September 21, 1947 in Main. King started off selling small stories to different magazines. In 1973 King made his first novel “Carrie”, which was published by a publishing house called Doubleday. He went on to write many more horror based novels that picked up Speed. He became very popular by 1990. In 1986 he finally created his 22nd book, “IT”. No body knows if there is a reason behind the horror except for the soul fact he just likes it. King did experience his friend get hit by a train and die when he was a kid and some say that’s the reason for the genre but that is only rumor.
“IT” is a horror novel that takes place in a small town called Derry in 1957. Bill, Ben, Beverly, Richie, Eddie, Mike Stanley make up “The Losers Club”. In the beginning of the novel Bill loses his little brother Georgie to the monster known as IT. IT haunts the town of Derry and returns to the town every 27 years. IT’s name is Pennywise and Pennywise preys on the people of Derry but especially the kids because their fear makes them more tasty. The losers club was formed when a group of kids were bullied by the same group, The Bowers Gang. The Losers Club members have also each had an encounter with Pennywise is different ways. Pennywise would visit them in a from they feared most. Ben gets encountered by a mummy, Eddie by a leper, Bill by Geordies ghost, Richie by a werewolf, Stan by two drowned boys, Beverly by blood pouring out her bath groom sink, and Mike by a terrifying bird. With similar but unique stories with Pennywise, they band together to defeat him one and for all.
King adds some really interesting elements in “IT” that you wouldn’t catch if you didn’t look for them. As a reader we are meant to believe that Pennywise is what these kids fighting. They are fighting Pennywise, but Pennywise is not their only enemy and is not the only reason why they are together. The Losers Club join together to defeat not only Pennywise but the Bowers Gang and all adults in Derry. The Bowers Gang is the Losers Gang’s worst enemy and they often get into brawls. Ben actually joins the Losers Gang because as the Bowers Gang was harassing him, the Losers fended him off with a rock fight in which the Bowers lose. The adults in Derry are also the enemy. Throughout the book, you think the adults would help against the bullying, but no, they will not help. The parents are also no help. Bowers parents are abusive towards him, Beverly has an abusive dad and everyone else’s parents seems to be crazy. The Losers only have each other and that is why they have such a strong bond, it is them versus Derry plus an alien clown.
The novel “IT” is really all about childhood and the transition into adulthood, and King perceives it in a very interesting way. The story begins with a focus on these kids and what they are doing to grow up. The Losers face many hardships like abusive and extreme bullying from kids their own age, and on top of that they have to deal with a clown that is trying to kill them. They did not have an easy childhood but a main lesson learned from them is sticking together. They would not have been able to do it without each other and because if their unity they overcame every hardship. The book also emphasizes a transition into adulthood. At the end of part 1 before they all go different ways, they think they have defeated Pennywise once and for all. It’s a bit odd but Beverly has sex with the entire group but it symbolizes their transition into adulthood. It also brings an extra sense of unity to the group. They then go their separate ways and live life until “IT” comes back again.
“IT”, by Stephen King, is an making horror novel with hidden meanings, terrifying scenes and just an all round great story. Stephen King’s history with horror novels really show in this spooky novel. I recommend this book to everyone who likes some suspense and horror. I personally loved this book because of how relatable childhood is and I also like a good suspenseful, intriguing book. Great book.
