The book starts in district 12 in the city of Panem with Katniss Everdeen as she is getting ready to wake up in the morning. The day when the book starts is on the day of the reaping where they will select two people under the age of 18, a boy and a girl, to compete in the 74th annual Hunger Games, where 24 people battle to the death. Katniss has a little sister named Prim who means the world to Katniss. At the reaping the girl that is selected is Prim and Katniss volunteers to go instead so that she doesn't have to go into the games. Then the guy representative of district 12 is Peeta Mellark. After they are selected they going into training and pregame ceremonies. At the introduction of the districts's contestants, Katniss Everdeen wears a dress that lights on fire and becomes known as "The Girl On Fire".
Collins's style electrifies the story and lets the reader create vivid image in their mind. By writing the story from Katniss's perspective, it allows the reader to truly understand Katniss's grit, passion, It persuades the audience to be in favor for Katniss because they understand her struggles before, during, and after the games. One moment where the point of view chosen for this story plays a key role is what goes through her mind right after she hears Prim's name: "There must have been some mistake. This can’t be happening. Prim was one slip of paper in thousands! Her chances of being chosen so remote that I’d not even bothered to worry about her." (Collins 22). This makes the audience sympathize for Katniss and by her volunteering made the readers fall in love with Katniss because of the way she loved her sister. by having Katniss's thoughts in the book you can really understand the agony she is going through and understand what pushes her to take her sister's place in the games.
The author uses the setting to create an extraordinary story and I feel like without the setting and the description, the story would loose a lot of its excitement and vividness. The details Collins used to describe the way the setting of the arena for the 74th Hunger Games: "take in the ring of tributes all equidistant from the Cornucopia, a giant golden horn shaped like a cone with a curved tail, the mouth of which is at least twenty feet high, spilling over with the things that will give us life here in the arena." (Collins 147). This really shows you the importance of the cornucopia and how it plays an affect in the games. As you read this fantastic book, the cornucopia has a bigger role as you go on and becomes very important towards the end of this exhilarating novel.
Collins really grabbed my attention in the book from the first chapter and kept my interest throughout the entire dystopian novel. The story seemed to come alive when Katniss took Prim's place in the games and it seemed to never have a dull moment after that point. After every page in this novel I seemed to buy into the story a little bit more and I always found myself loosing track of time while reading. Even though I watched this movie before I read the book, I did notice some very subtle details and changes that made me enjoy the book more than the movie. My favorite of those differences was that in the book, Peeta and Katniss both were depicted as being very beat up after the games and he had to get a prosthetic leg where in the movie he keeps his leg after being cut by Cato. The idea of the prosthetic leg and Katniss's hearing loss shows how much damage the games can cause even if you do win. I highly recommend this novel to anyone who is above the age of thirteen because there are a lot of very descriptive and gruesome scenes that probably aren't appropriate for everyone. Collins did a fantastic job with this book and I feel like it is an amazing book to read no matter what genres you like ...more "
