-I loved how in-depth Augustus and January were written as characters. A lot of times with romances it's easy to keep the characters cheesy and a little bit cliche, but this author did a great job at having unique, meaningful stories behind each of these characters. It gave depth to the story outside of just the romance. Augustus was struggling from his recent marriage and continually struggling from his troubling childhood. January was struggling with her father's recent, but unexpected, death and grappling with the knowledge that he had been cheating on her mother--even during the mother's two bouts of cancer. I loved how Gus and January leaned on each other and slowly shared their grievances. Gus was a great character to encourage January to still see the world beautifully even in the face of this disloyal discovery of her father.

-I loved loved loved how Gus and January were previously college peers in the same writing workshops. It added that perfect amount of long-term history and lust for each other that fuelled the progression of their relationship. The author kept referencing a saucy night that Gus and January shared together in college at a frat party, which, again, kept me wanting more and see them get together in the present-day book! I do wish we eventually had a proper scene description of this frat party night, but we did get plenty of scenes of Gus and January together in the present time.

-I really enjoyed the setting! It felt like such a cozy, beachside town, but in Michigan (which felt unique), so it felt homier to me. The fact that it rained so often was lovely too and made for great scenes (especially in the last scene haha).

-I thought the "conflict" at the end when Naomi shows up moreso showed January's insecurities and fears rather than a reflection of Gus' feelings. I know it was a pretty rational fear to worry that Gus would go back to Naomi, but from the reader's perspective it just seemed really silly of her to worry so much about.

-The book was AMAZING until the last page. I am not a fan of proposals in front of a family, so it felt very icky that that's how Gus ended up proposing (and at a surprise party too...). It also didn't feel really authentic to Gus, either. I imagine that he would propose in an intimate setting, where it's focused on just the two of them and that would be the "magical" component for January. But whatever, I'm glad they're happy haha.

-January and Gus' fictional stories were also really fun and interesting to learn. I liked that their genres contrasted. I also loved that Gus was such a big fan of January's work (secretly). When he could recite one of her dedication pages that was SO SWEET. I loved that he was sort of secretly in love with January for quite a long time. Anyways, I loved Gus' cult book too. January's research dates were adorable and Gus' were interesting to hear about cults and how his life influenced his interest in cults.

-Of course, I loved how they switched genres and wrote romance/literary fiction. I loved Gus' ending of his cult story that the main characters die together after escaping and that's his "romantic" ending. ...more "
