There are at least a couple of inter-plays of significance. There is the good vs the evil which is sometimes hinted at through the people carrying the signs advising citizens to repent, (of sins that might be affecting the universe) and then there also the sentiment that it's the ones on "clock time;" those who are the good, vs the ones who revert back to "real time;" the evil ones, or who attempt to adjust their own circadium(?) (body's sleep-wake rhythms) to the new day/night elongated hours... they're portrayed as the evil ones that don't fit in to the rest of society and are targeted (piano teacher is sure the eucalyptus tree didn't simply fall, but that it was clock-timers who'd purposely made it crash into her house and smash her piano...) and the notion that good will prevail over the bad (Julia's father didn't go off with the piano teacher, but stayed with his wife, Julia's Mother, clock-time family, in the end) and even though her boyfriend Seth was dying, she was still ever-hopeful that he'd recover... and then there is the magical vs. the spiritual. The reason I think that the term "Miracles" was used in the title of the book, is that the sense was spread to the reader (not sure exactly how this was done) but there was a "feeling" that it would take a miracle to revert the "slowing" of the earth's rotation back to normal again. At one point, there was mention of the days getting shorter again, but that event was short-lived... however, regarding spiritual practices, there was a feeling that those who might be considered to be "fanatic" such as devout Jews keeping the Sabbath from sundown to sunset might be out of place, since they were against joining the rest of the citizens who were on the clock-time making the adjustments to the environment, (black-out curtains, grow-lamps) rather than adapting to the "new" nature (which altered time, so to speak). In short, the Age of Miracles, insinuates that the age has come when miracles ought to be believed in, once again, for without them we are doomed. Or is that only a subliminal message I am reading into the title, because truthfully, I didn't really focus on whether or not the topic of miracles actually came up in the text of the book itself, I only remember seeing the word "Miracles" on the title itself! Sorry if I'm misleading you to jump to the same conclusions as I did. But it's still, "food for thought." On that note, wanted to also observe that the text touched upon a group of individuals who might have been adopting the lifestyle of breatharians (it simply mentioned that they had stopped eating). From what I've gathered about present-day breatharians, they exist on "prana" which is a spiritual force. Obviously, in the text, there was no such mention to their being connected with this force, and in fact in the story those who had stopped eating were found to have died... ...more "
