I’m giving it 4 stars because while it’s not perfect, it’s thoughtful, bold, and does something the Church has needed for a long time: it challenges the harmful narratives we’ve absorbed without throwing away God’s design.

One of the most powerful parts of the book is how it addresses two deeply damaging ideas: first, the message that all men will fall prey to lust unless they get enough sex...this idea that men are wired to be controlled by their sexual urges, and that it’s a wife’s job to keep her husband on track by giving him access. And second, the message sent to women that their sexual experience, needs, and voices don’t really matter...that as long as they’re “doing their duty,” the emotional or physical cost to them is secondary.

The authors take a strong, research-backed stand against both of these harmful messages, and it’s so refreshing. They remind both men and women that intimacy isn’t just about managing temptation or keeping a marriage “functional.” It’s about connection, mutual love, safety, respect, and joy. Women are not objects, men are not animals, and sex is not just a transaction to keep sin at bay.

This book doesn’t just point out what’s broken, it also offers a healthier, more Christ-centered vision for what intimacy can be. It’s not about tallying up enough sex to fix a marriage or assuming that physical acts will automatically create emotional closeness. It’s about doing the hard (but beautiful) work of building intimacy from the inside out: emotionally, spiritually, and relationally, so that physical intimacy becomes an overflow of the heart, not a forced duty or a desperate fix.

I especially appreciated how much the authors used stories, data, and real-life experiences to paint this picture. At times, I did wish there was a bit more theological depth or more anchoring in Scripture alongside the research. But overall, the book is gracious, honest, and hopeful. It’s the kind of resource I think a lot of couples, pastors, and ministry leaders need on their shelves.

It’s not about blaming one side or the other, or declaring war on old teachings. It’s about recovering what God intended for marriage and creating space for healing, growth, and truly mutual love. If you’re willing to wrestle with some tough but necessary truths, this is well worth your time. ...more "
