And I'm happy to report that I enjoyed Gardens of the Moon. It wasn't the best book I've ever read, it wasn't the best the beginning to a series I've ever read. But it was good enough. And I think it more than accomplished (what I believed to be) its goal to set up this world and how expansive it is.

It really is as confusing as everyone makes it out to be. At least at first. And if you're not paying close attention maybe even throughout the whole thereof. Steven Erikson drops you in the middle of the action and he does not hold your hand while taking you from continent to continent, from character to character. And there are so many of them. It was honestly around 2/3 of the book when I could finally say that I sort of understood what was happening, at least on a surface level. Before then, I was just along for the ride. There were just so many characters. I liked some (Tattersail, Crokus, Apsalar, Baruk, Dujek), I was intrigued by some (Anomander Rake, Kruppe), I hated some (fucking Hairlock), but I never connected with any of them on a deeper level. We just kind of float from one character's perspective to the next and then back and then some other character without really learning anything meaningful about any of them. That was what in my opinion was lacking in Gardens of the Moon.

Of course, this is literally just the first book in ten-book series, within a universe containing over twenty books, so I won't judge it too harshly without having the greater context and seeing the bigger picture I'm sure the rest of the books will provide. What ended up interesting me the most, though, was the huge amount and confusion of fantasy elements (gods, magic, dreamworlds, seers, magical lucky coins and swords, undead skeleton people, bug people, all types of things) and that I never knew what could be happening in the next chapter. I was always curious to see how much weirder Erikson could make the current situation. I'll probably pick up Deadhouse Gates within two or three weeks and I can't wait to start fresh with a whole new cast of characters! ...more "
