Shibui (shin-BOO-ee), like wabi, sabi, and aware, connotes a certain kind of beauty. Like sabi, and unlike aware, shibui refers to a kind of beauty that only time can reveal. One of the reasons language has such immense emotional power is the way people use symbols to link together several sensory sym-bols to make an emotionally evocative image. Shibui can be used to describe the taste of a certain kind of tea, scenery of a gray, brown, or moss-green color, or the impression a person gets from looking at the face of a certain kind of older person.”

“সব জায়গায় দেখা যায় যে, নিজের জাতি সম্বন্ধে একটা না একটা সংস্কার জাগ্রত রয়েছে। সত্যের অনুসন্ধান করতে হলে এসকল সংস্কারের উপর উঠতে হবে। কুক্ষণে এদেশে বিলেত থেকে নােতুন করে ‘আৰ্য্য’ শব্দের আমদানি হয়েছিল , মাক্স মুলারের লেখা পড়ে, আর নব্য হিন্দুয়ানির দলের বিজ্ঞানের আর ইতিহাসের বদহজমের ফলে, একটা নােতুন গোঁড়ামি এসে আমাদের ঘাড়ে চেপেছে, সেটার নাম হচ্ছে 'আর্য্যামি'। এই গোঁড়ামি আমাদের দেশে নানা স্থানে নানা মূর্তি ধ’রেছে—স্বাধীন চিন্তার শত্রু এই বহুরূপী রাক্ষসকে নিপাত না করলে ইতিহাস চর্চা বা ভাষাতত্বে আলােচনা —কোনটারই পথ নিরাপদ হয় না। এই গোঁড়ামির মূল সূত্র হচ্ছে এই--
১। যা-কিছু ভালাে তা প্রাচীন আর্য্যদের মধ্যে ছিল (অথচ এই আৰ্য্য যে কারা, সে সম্বন্ধে কোনও জ্ঞান কারুর নেই—একটা আবছা আবছা রকমের ধারণা আছে যে মুসলমানদের আবার পূর্বের কালের হিন্দুরাই আৰ্য্য)।
২। অতএব যা-কিছু খারাপ, সমস্তই আর্য্যেতর--‘অনাৰ্য্য'। সংস্কৃত ভাষায় আৰ্য্য শব্দের যে মানে, ইংরিজি Aryan-এর মানে ঠিক তা নয় ; non-Aryan-এর অর্থ সংস্কৃতের ‘অনাৰ্য্য’ দাঁড়-করানােতে যত কিছু বিভ্রাট ঘটেছে।
৩। প্রাচীন হিন্দুরা আৰ্য্য, আমরা হিন্দু, এদের বংশধর ; সুতরাং আমাদের মধ্যে অনাৰ্য্য কিছুই নেই। যদি বা কিছু থাকে—সে-সব কথা তােলা উচিত নয়।
আমাদের মধ্যে অনধিকারী ঐতিহাসিকের অন্ত নেই। এদের সকলেই এই তিন বিশ্বাসের খোঁটায় আপনাদের বেঁধে মনের আনন্দে চোখ বুঁজে ঘুরপাক খাচ্ছেন—মনে করছেন, ঐতিহাসিক গবেষণা করছি। ভাষাতত্ত্বেও উৎকট আৰ্য্যামি বিদ্যমান। তবে সৌভাগ্যের বিষয় সেটা আস্তে আস্তে চলে যাচ্ছে। প্রাকৃতকে এখন অনেকে মানছেন। বাঙলা-ভাষাটা যে অনাৰ্য্য ভাষার ছাঁচে ঢালা আৰ্য্য ভাষা, সেটাও ক্রমে ক্রমে লােকে মানবে ; আৰ্য্যামি যতদিন বাধা দিতে থাকবে, ততদিন বাঙলার ঠিক স্বরূপটি আমাদের বের করা কঠিন হবে।”
