To make this all about me: I sought out books that referenced and spoke about the Ferguson Uprising.
I am the son of a White father and a Native American mother who grew up NEXT to Ferguson, and was driven thru the city daily back-and-forth to school down the very road that the majority of conflict and destruction took place. My mom -to borrow an apt phrase from the African American community, she '' passed " as White, and more painfully to me now to consider in retrospect, who was ashamed of her ethnic background, and told us to not talk about it.
Gay myself, i can relate but not identify with that 'passing' term and agenda as well.
On the day of the riots -- i balk at using that loaded word -- I was IN Ferguson and with a Black friend who told me to "Go home, and now before the sun sets."
That still makes me tear-up, so painful to remember.
I've long-connected to the song by Tracy Chapman of the late 80s off her title album, "Across the Lines". There was that unsaid, but undeniable racial line of demarcation between Ferguson and Florissant, and the Florissant Road always-traveled-but-less-taken, was separated by a bridge, a viaduct, no one was to cross casually nor ignorable. " . . . who would dare to go, under the bridge, over the tracks, that separate Whites from Blacks. That imaginary-but-inescapable border became a Berlin Wall when bussing and race-made, anti-Black property covenants that prohibited Blacks from owning homes in White areas fell. . . White anger became 'White Flight', newly-established boom towns of White-fleeing residents into places like St. Charles, Missouri had a booming development of marketed homes to Whites on the run from Blacks. And the assertive bussing of Black and White kids spawned the Catholic schools to blossom into being established to provide educational opportunities for those effectively racist White families who suddenly became "Catholic" overnight to escape racially-legally-mandated co-educational public schools integration. St. Louis became a city/region where kids who attended Catholic schools was twice the rate in other cities.
Ferguson is a suburb of St. Louis MO, and that despite that specific city's effect, the area has become very conservative due to the Trump/Hawley effect. A couple of memorials to Mike Brown- the teen who was shot by police -- have been vandalized, and the family itself personas-non-grata still. However you feel about the story or the zeitgeist around it, there was absolutely no reason for the unarmed teenager who was running from a police officer to be shot in the back a half-dozen times. It still keeps happening, still unarmed Black folks being shot by police, the 'Ferguson Effect' making no effect at all, nor effecting needed and effective change. ...more "
