It can’t get much more boring than that! Having said that, let me explain a bit more. I myself grew up in the wilderness. It took a bit more than an hour’s drive for us to reach the nearest gas station and post office. It took longer to reach a town and even longer to reach a city. In this modern day, it’s hard to imagine that there are places and people who still live in that kind of isolation. But I am living proof that it’s true. So I understand this book in a way that few others would. I can identify with this girl through our mutual experiences in living in an isolated, wild, dangerous environment. In that perspective, I can truly say that this book deserves the five stars I gave it.

This is quite possibly the best book I have ever read. The writer's lovely, poetic prose took me on a journey few could ever do. This story about a Kentucke girl is so well written, I felt as if I were there beside Lael, watching as her life and heart unfolded. Unlike so many other books, I could not predict what would happen. At times i wanted to smack the Leal for her stupid decisions, as well as glory with her in her accomplishments. The story meanders, as so much of life does. Even so, I was captivated and could hardly stop turning the pages! I was also quite impressed with the historical facts presented. Lael's father, I believe, was fashioned after the life of Daniel Boone, just as Fort Click was fashioned after Fort Boonesborough. I do regret that the author did not revisit one person (I will not spoil future readers with the name!) to bring more of a conclusion to that part of the story. However, the author satisfied that part well enough that I did not feel as if I were left hanging. Again, overall, this is very possibly the best book I have yet to read! ...more "

"Did you know bloodletting is still done in today’s world? Today it’s called therapeutic phlebotomy. Mostly it’s done when people have a build-up of iron in their system. I believe the medical terminology is hereditary hemochromatosis. But I’m too lazy to look it up right now, and medical terminology was many many years ago. Anybody was to concur or set me straight?
