Black Elk Speaks. It’s the year 1863, that’s when black elk was born. This story is about my great, great, great uncle Nicholas Black Elk ( that's his wasichu name.) He was a Lakota visionary, a healer to his people. It takes place ehanna back in pine ridge before it was a reservation. When the land and the people were free. Back when the Oglala, Hunkpapa, Sichangu, itazipcho, mnikhowozu lived free and happy, celebrating their ways of life. This book talks about the wounded knee massacre, greasy grass, and other famous battles/wars. It also talks about his vision his vision is a very important part of the story. He was the savior of his people, he healed and had visions that helped his people in many ways.
The author of this book is John G. Neihardt. In this book the author never talks, black elk and his friends/family talked and told the stories. He wrote 7 very long appendix. This book inspired me, even more, to fix the circle, “the sacred tree.” He talked about many events I knew about but in his perspective, how it was, who got shot, who won, etc. He also talked a lot about Manderson, Pine Ridge SD, That's actually we're my family is from and where they live right now. The connection you feel between you and black elk is amazing. It's like he’s telling his story to you straight face to face. Like in one part he tells about how in battle he got shot and he shows his scar to the author. By the way, it's an interview turned into a book. But he did a very good job explaining everything, love his book very very much!

I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone. Native people will understand it way more, like about the ceremonies and everything. But he explains it so you could read even if you don’t know what something is it will tell you. This book was easy for me too read and understand. I had no favorite part it was all exciting and different parts had a different emotion. I connected with ceremonies and other things they did. The ending really motivated me, even more, to get out there and learn even more culture than I already know. Black Elk said that his vision was gonna save the sacred circle or tree, in the end after all the bad stuff happens he talked about how the circle/tree is broken now. But slowly we're revitalizing everything we can. ...more "
