The world of 1984 is set in London, Oceania(formerly known as England). In this world, there are no laws, there is no privacy, and there is never a way to know what is the truth, or what is a lie. Winston Smith is a middle age man who works an office job forging documents. The government is in charge of what you eat, where you sleep, and even what you think.
In the beginning, Winston is passive. He doesn’t like the government, but he does not have the words to express it. Then Winston does something risky, he gets a journal. Over time, as he does more things to oppose the government, his knowledge changes. The more he realizes he’s been lied to, the more angry he gets, and the more likely he is to go against.
As far as how “1984” was written, the author was very creative in their words, and they even made their own language. The way they used imagery was pretty good, and they overall were easy for me to understand. I also liked the setting, and rules set up, I believe it was very well done, and overall made me rethink a couple things. As far as story goes, I am not the biggest fan of 1984. It was a bit predictable. The narrator(Winston) makes predictions for you, and they end up to be true, and even then, these predictions are easy to come to on your own. I personally prefer subtle foreshadowing then plot twists, but with this book they just gave it to me. I also did not relate to any of the characters, yes they are victims of a world where it really sucks to be in it, but who they were, and their personalities weren’t that deep(maybe that was the whole point). I especially did not like the use of women in this book(Although the time which it was written should be considered), in Winston's mind, he hates women because they are “supposed” to be sexual. It kind of has a misogynistic ring to it, and in the end, he does not even like his lover because she no longer looked, “appealing”. I really did not enjoy those parts of the book when he was with his lover because I feel as though their relationship was born just out of the fact that they hate the government, even if that is not what the author intended.
Seeing as this is one of the more classic dystopias, I would still recommend it for people to read. After reading, I was able to grasp understand a little more about societies today that follow similarly with how the government worked in 1984. I would recommend this book to young adults.
Overall, “1984” written by George Orwell, was an okay book on my scale. ...more "
