The book is centered around the Georgia Flu which kills almost every person on Earth. It switches back and forth from the present and the future. The future time resembles life before technology. Arthur is a well known actor and at the beginning of the book performs a main character in King Lear, a Shakespeare play. He dies of a heart attack on stage, when Jeevan, who is a paramedic sitting in the crowd tries to save him. A little girl Kristen, who is also apart of the play, is also part of the symphony that travels around after the flu. She is one of the children that doesn’t really remember life before the plague. Miranda writes the comic book, Dr. Eleven, which interests Tyler, who is another young character in the book. He is Arthur Leander’s son, but lives away from him with his mother, Elizabeth, and grows up in Israel. All of these characters are connected whether they realize it or not.

In the book, Mandel connects all the characters by using fate. She connects them by using the past, future, and present. She also delivers a message about technology and how it can be good and bad. In the book, Kirsten doesn't remember much before the flu. Mandel uses and airplane throughout the book to symbolize technology. Airplanes today are seen as a usual part of life and many people don't see the technology that goes into how the plane flies and how it is flown. She also shows that the flu was spread around the world because people would carry it through airports and airplanes and give it to others. This is a double meaning in the book but is not talked about in the actual text.

Station Eleven is a great overall book and I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys Sci-Fi or fiction. The book can get hard to understand at times because of how it shifts between time but it tells the story from a different perspective which is very interesting. ...more "
