Delia said: " This is a book I never thought I'd read. I don't know why, I had never been interested in this novel until last week. A thought popped into my head: what if I just read The Bell Jar? and so I went. This book is thought of as the female equivalent to This is a book I never thought I'd read. This book is thought of as the female equivalent to The Catcher in the Rye but I think it's nothing like it. I don't have to say that of course I prefer Catcher because it's my book ever and I think of Holden every day of my life, but The Bell Jar was definitely brilliant.

The first part, when she is in New York, is what I liked the least, but then when she goes back to her hometown it turns into a perfect spiral of madness. There's a whole sick and twisted atmosphere in the whole lovel, but my favourite aspect about it was the meaning of the title: the bell jar is that invisible line around you that isolates you from the rest of the world when you struggle with your mental health. I am fascinated that such a concept was created because so many people can identify with it. I've been inside the bell jar as well and I know how hard it is to get out of it.

The one big downside to this story is THE RACISM. The voice of the main character is so blatantly racist that it feels cheap and ugly. The story is brilliant, but racism really puts me off and during some passages I thought if I read the n-word once more I'd just throw the book out the window. However, I guess what you can see here is how society has changed, because it is surprising that something like this could even be published back then and no editors suggested to eliminate the racist bits that add absolutely nothing to the story and only make readers feel uncomfortable.

To sum up, this is a great novel that depicts depression accurately and shows things that weren't very often talked about at the time, like suicidal ideation or what happened at psych wards. It is even more revolutionary because it was written by a woman based on her own experiences. Reading this in 2022 makes me wish the racism had been edited out, though. ...more "
