This is a beautiful book.

This book aches. It breathes. It all but lives. This type of book is a rare treasure that makes you truly lose yourself in its words and its understanding of the human condition. It asks the big questions and then answer them in small pieces that somehow mean more than any grand answers. You want to hold it close. You want to shout at the world to read it. You want it to never end.

Maybe it's all because of the nature of Faustian bargains and immortality, but The Invisible Life of Addie Larue understands what it is to be a human yearning for more. More time. More love. More life. Its characters are complex and yet so simply to understand. As a girl cursed to be forgotten, Addie is fierce and driven, determined to outrun a literal devil and beat him at his own game 300 years in. Henry is a love letter to those who never feel like enough, who have to weather the storms inside their heads as they desperately try to find something to hold onto. And when these two collide, fate seems to have delivered a gift to on another.

To be warned, it is a slow book. There are parts that lull or drag, and some parts where the repetition gets a little much (Addie's forgotten again, she has seven freckles like a constellation, Henry has black curls - WE KNOW), but these are minor complaints. However, by the end, this book breezes by. I guessed a fair bit of the twists, but there's something about this story that makes you urgent to find out the how it happens over the what happens, which is magic in and of itself. The parts with Luc, the god who answers after dark, were personally my favourite given that Schwab takes a potentially standard villain and complicates him - it doesn't make him a good person, but my, does Luc ever fascinate me.

"Defiant joy" is a phrase V.E. Schwab has used in describing this book, and it fits to a T. Despite all the shit Addie goes through, there are so many little things about life that empower her to find the strength to prevail. In times like right now, the world really needs a story like this, a story made of hope.
