Status Updates From The Hammer

honestly, it's so good to be back. much as i enjoyed the so called siege trilogy, this is much more what i like from kj parker's longform writing.

“It was as though Furio had been tied down, and had suddenly been set free. He stood up. ‘Sorry,’ he said, ‘but you can’t do it. I wont let you. That’s all there is to it.’

Gignomai looked at him. There was love in his eyes, and a kind of gratitude. ‘Why?”

‘For your sake,’ Furio said. ‘Not theirs.’

‘Ah.’ Gignomai smiled. ‘I always did like you, Furio.’”

“If Gig’s right, to understand evil is to become capable of it. On those terms, I’d rather be really, really stupid.”

the cousin stuff is kind of weirding me out ngl

“He’s a savage.”

Gignomai shrugged. “I don’t think so. In fact, none of them are. It’s just a word we use so we don’t have to bother trying to understand strangers.”

Ok, I said it took me a minute to get hooked on this one but dear god is it working now. It keeps escalating and I have no idea where this is going (or rather I am sure the idea I have formed is not the complete picture, because I still don't know what was "the happening" and there is no way this is not going to come back punching me in the face, knowing this author).

I have started this 3 times by now - I like the voice of the character, as usual with K.J. Parker and his thought process is interesting, but man is this a slower start and I read in the evening... I keep falling asleep T_T I can do it!!
