Finished a wonderfully perceptive chapter on pseudonymity, disguise and metamorphosis in the life and work of Stendhal. Starobinski's great gift is to take deep critical analysis and present it in a completely unpretentious, jargon-free manner. Reading him is like having a passionate conversation with one's smartest friend.

This chapter on Rousseau is just wonderful. Starobinski's analysis of Rousseau is clear-eyed and unwavering but never less than generous and thoughtful. He somehow manages pitiless honesty and tender sympathy in the same essay. Superb.
