I’m afraid of what will be born and take possession of me, and drag me WHERE? Shall I have to go off again, leaving my research my book my everything else unfinished? Shall I awake in a few months, in a few years, broken, deceived, in the midst or new ruins? I would like to see the truth clearly before it is too late

The protagonist explores the hurried and curious characters he encounters on the sidewalk: a father with his son, an embarrassed painter, and so on. This, (in my opinion), is Sartre trying to reflect the almost violent flow of the bourgeoisie in some streets, and how deserted some of the poorer ones are.

Despite the protagonist's antipathy, he's capable of laughing at absurd things, like a pesticide shop next to the most expensive church in France. This makes the character more realistic, less of a pathetic figure, and a truly flesh-and-blood man.

A little confusing. A little all over the place.
