I mean pacing issues aside, I really enjoyed it. I saw another reviewer say this feels like a prologue novel and while I can see where they’re coming from… I still liked it. It’s also establishing an entire alternate history so I’m fine to give it leeway. And the ideas in this are so fun, resurrecting ancient heroes, demonic sorcerers, ancient cultures and civilizations. All things I enjoy. Onto the next.

Something tells me Dahak is at the heart of every woe that has happened before this terrible war. Ugh. Bastard.

Yeah killing that fire was a mistake. But we saw the curse at work Dwyrin wanted to say no but physically could not. Crazy.

Oh so Alais was literally some kind of vampire. Interesting. Too greedy for her own good. Oh god we’re almost at the end and not one thread has been tied off. This will be… an interesting end.

Yeah Palmyra is screwed. Shit. But I think Persia is fucked also. But we’ll see, sooner or later. Shame about Ahmet.

Oh this is getting good. And now Maxian wants to resurrect Alexander the Great. That should be fun! Im interested to see how this great battle in Persia ends. Damn.

It’s so in-depth, and the conspiracy with the curse upon Rome is growing more interesting. Lead is a protector against the power of Magi, and so roman pipes are made of lead to build trace amounts of lead in Roman citizens. But what IS the curse? I guess we’ll find out soon. It’s holding my attention but the pacing is a bit… in the air.

Pre-Islamic Arabian polytheism is a fascinating thing. I’m glad to see mention of it here.

Seems this curse/blessing in Rome is some sort double-edged sword, protecting its people but also killing some? Im interested to see what Maxian discovers

Im enjoying it. It’s dense as hell but the pieces are falling together. Worried about Dwyrin, poor kid. Dont know what sort of hellish deal hes being entangled in

This war in Persia isnt going to end well for Rome. I suppose Maxian will be figuring out who is behind the killing of these families. Hmm.

Oh this is getting interesting. I can see how the storylines will begin weaving together. Thyatis will be sent by Anastasia to seduce Maxian, the Emperor’s brother.

Well this just throws you right in, doesn’t it? Not really sure where it’s going yet, but it’s interesting. The Romans using Greek gods names instead of the Latinized versions is a bit distracting, won’t lie.

While I don't want to DNF this book just yet, I am going to set it aside. There are other books I'm more interested in reading this year.
