Loving this, the writing is great.
I just hope stuff like this gets examined and subverted (surely it will?!): "And now he tithed not as lord, taking a small portion in exchange for protection and justice, but as a thief, taking what he wanted and offering in return only fear. Local farm men had banded together in summer and tried to take him, but he was a lord, well-mounted and well-armed;"
