I would take a lover and keep him separate; but, as the claustrophobia of that winter’s freeze drove us all closer together in our Blitz-spirit of rationing, power cuts and isolation, and as I saw how Alex was loved by others than myself, the whole “keep it separate” idea weakened and cracked like thin ice over dark water.
