Children were to connect proverbs to their meanings, and most couldn't. They thought they understood; the proverb activated a schema for possible symbolisms, so in their search for the corresponding sentence, they formed seemingly arbritrary connections. This links well to how children learn language, as they connect familiar words to a schema (context) and use it to interpret unfamiliar words. 'Synchretism.'

I bite off more than I can chew with this book, as highly scientific & researchy as it is. Chapter 3 reveals that children between 6-7 years old don't understand each other due to egocentrism. What was most interesting to me is their inability to express relations, using 'and then' simply to demonstrate the idea has come into their mind rather than denoting cause or sequence. This chapter provided great insight into how research with children is carried out, and clearly layed out the types of speech (either socialised or egocentric) - repetition, pure monologues, collective monologues, adapted information, criticism, commands, questions, and answers. Overall, 6-7 year old children speak mostly for themselves, to 'accompany and reinforce individual activity'.

As a person thoroughly interested in psychology and human development, I'm super excited to start reading this!!
