I really liked the part when Joanna not only gets personal satisfaction from teaching but realises that even difficult children like Kostuś can find passion and self-confidence in learning. This conforms with my own experience.

Having recently been to Grodno, the city in today's Belarus where Orzeszkow lived and died, I decided to read more of this poetess. This short novela adresses one of the main topics of Polish Positivism, the education of the poor (in their mother tongue) and by this means the upkeep of Polish identity during the times of annexation.
