I think the author's main goal is to get rid of his 'Crazy" feeling. He feels restless, and when he is on a run, his main obstacles are his brain. His brain can't shut off at night, and he can't stop thinking about flashbacks to the previous war.

His main goal right now is just to live a normal life. He cant really do that though because he keeps getting flashbacks from his past in the war. It is an obstacle in his life that he is trying to get rid of by going on runs to try to forget about it all.

right now in the flashback his goal was to become an astronaut, but because of his poor eyesight, the Air Force lied to him.
