"Have you no feeling for the place where you were born, no impulse to fight to keep it untouched?"
This is heroine Lorna Forrester, whose act of bravery later on is being a courier for the Confederate army.
And I get that histories are complex, but
yikes. Took me a while to get it, coz I'm not too familiar with US history, but this makes it hard to cheer for Lorna's war efforts. (Ramon at least is only after $$$.)

"Any southerner knows that (slavery) is morally wrong, but the precedent goes back as far as recorded history & so enjoys quasi-respectability. ...it will be abandoned naturally when some other form of labour, such as the immigrants in northern states, becomes cheaper than buying & keeping slaves."
Ramon Cazenave, the hero, says this. Yikes.

I've been trying to get into this one for a long time. I can't, so it's time to say goodbye.

She was being ridiculously sensitive. It was probably common to see a woman here in this cabin that it had not required comment. Since Ramon was their commanding officer, it would have been impolite, not to say subordinate, for his officers to accord her much attention.
Of course it could be the fact that a woman being on board a ship was thought to be bad luck.

I really should have looked up images of Lorna's hotel in the Bahamas earlier. Very cool,

Lorna, go go go! You keep on giving those two bitchy Lansing sisters everything their snotty little beings deserve :D

*fans self* My, that was some sexy towel down after Lorna's bath topped off with this: Methinks Lorna had temporarily forgotten about the party...

"She lay reading for a time, a novel she had picked up in a stall of used books outside a shop. It held her attention only to a degree, for the heroine was insipid, the hero overbearing, and the story filled with unlikely events and coincidences."

How refreshing, a heroine with the common sense to stay put for her own good.

"So I am. If I rid you of your wet things, seeing faithfully to your comfor, will you act as my valet?"
Dang, that was one lively wedding night, glad she didn't end up with her husband :D
