"Any southerner knows that (slavery) is morally wrong, but the precedent goes back as far as recorded history & so enjoys quasi-respectability. ...it will be abandoned naturally when some other form of labour, such as the immigrants in northern states, becomes cheaper than buying & keeping slaves."

Ramon Cazenave, the hero, says this. Yikes.

"Have you no feeling for the place where you were born, no impulse to fight to keep it untouched?"

This is heroine Lorna Forrester, whose act of bravery later on is being a courier for the Confederate army.

And I get that histories are complex, but
yikes. Took me a while to get it, coz I'm not too familiar with US history, but this makes it hard to cheer for Lorna's war efforts. (Ramon at least is only after $$$.)
