The protagonist in the book is 12 year old Catherine with a brother who has autism. She is an amazing artist but most of her family's attention goes to her brother, this is a huge problem in the story because she states she feels like his shadow. Throughout the book she has trouble making friends and blames everything on her brother but her parents still don't pay enough attention to her so she just copies with it.

The setting in the book "Rules", is mainly in Catherine's house with her brother trying to help him out because according to her he is always getting into trouble. Currently in the book she is at her local doctors office for David her autistic brother's weekly check-up, where she meets her friends Jason and they run beside the beach.

The genre of the book Rules is fiction. I also believe it is realistic in some ways because some people do have autistic siblings and have trouble trying to teach them how the world works.

12 year old Catherine just wants a normal life with a brother with autism. she has spent years trying to make a list of rules for her brother David hoping one day he with wake up normal. And she can finally live a normal life and not having her life revolve around David.
