Frank Yerby's writing reminds me of Mark Twain's novel "Roughing It".

Guy has left home to seek his fortune after the death of his father in duel with his brother. Guy discovered that his uncle rigged the duel. Even though his father asked him to forgive his uncle Guy cannot find it in his heart to do so. He goes to Cuba, hoping to secure his future through slave running.
