Chapter 16 could quite possibly be the best book chapter I have read so far this year. So magical and visceral and combining mystery and fantasy and indigenous lore. Beautifully done

It's odd that Lucia and Corbette's emotional and physical relationship seems rushed. The author through Lucia's perspective will state how much he's changed, but it isn't really shown through his actions. And weirder still is Kai who keeps having scenes illustrating his genuine affection for Zetian and his self sacrifice for his people. Corbette is honestly turning out to be the week link in this story.

The plot is engaging and I'm really enjoying it, but I struggle with the character choices. Corbette is still cold, while poor Lucia, who has every right to be skittish after her rape, is the one who is courageous and compassionate. It's becoming hard to root for a romance when he seems so undeserving of her.

I hope it doesn't take most of the book for Corbette to realize he wants Lucia. I want to see them work together.

I love that this picks up immediately at the end of the last one.

Slow start to the novel, but once into it, it grabs you. Not so sure I like Emory & Lucia as she's way to whiney and insecure and he's way to rigid. I like the way the story is progressing the world building however.

Started well but I'm getting bored. This book has serious pacing problems.

DNF'd at 30%

I'm really struggling with this one. It is part of a series and definitely can't be read as a standalone.
