This is a very ambitious fantasy book, with massive, planet-scale events in its history, and the highly visible effects of the existence of powerful magic-wielding rulers on its societies.

The characters seem to be assuming a little too much about how the immortality amulet works, far beyond how Erimenes described it. And they also seem to be ignoring something potentially important that he said it does to its users.

This author, unlike Grubb, knows the difference between "poring" and "pouring". And unlike Clarke or Gibbins, he also knows how to tell a story!

Most people who talk about this book call one of the characters a "genie", but he's actually just the ghost of an ancient ascetic philosopher, who happens to reside in a jug.
