Finished Mary my theory is that this whole novela is Wollstonecraft griving and processing the death of Fanny Blood whom she loved. She was lacking the framework to explain this loss, so she wrote this. It had to be tough.
Anyway, I do see why some of the scholars are like "she couldn't write fiction to save her life" yes, as a novel, this isn't particularly good. I still had good time.

The plan is to finish Mary today (I have about 20 pages left in that) and then set this aside for a bit and return to Maria later on.
So far this is definitely no masterpiece but I don't mind reading it. My general tiredness doesn't mesh well with the writing style but I'm finding the content interesting - from the angle of someone who is obsessed with Wollstonecraft's family.

I'm loving the editing work in this, the fact that Faubert is calling Fanny Blood Wollstonecraft's first love without making a deal out of it is stealing my heart. (Whether they were friends or there were romantic feelings involved, she WAS her fist love.)
Also, the fact that I have opinions on translators from Italian won't stop being hilarious to me. Mark Musa? No!

UHM i forgot i was reading this ngl but I am absolutely losing it over this anecdote: "A friend told Amelia Alderson that he considered MW 'voluptuous', a fact which Alderson did not dispute, but wondered how he could say it" 💀💀💀💀
