... Their voices
Were harsh, their songs melancholy; they sang of
Lovers dying and of children left unborn...
Some beat their drums; others beat their sorry breasts
And wailed, and writhed in vacant ecstasy...
... Even the crows were so
Silent on tress, and the children, wide eyed, still;
All were watching these poor creatures' convulsions.
Such evocative imagery!

Smoke in Colombo
On that last ride home we had the smoke
Following us, along the silenced
Streets, lingering on, though the fire
Was dead then in the rubble and the ruins,
Lingering on as milk lingers on
In udders after the calves are buried,
Lingering on as grief lingers on...
