I really like the world-building and the characters, but I wish there had been more action and less political intrigue. I also want to read more about female power and Slievi as a strong character, but so far my expectations are not met. The themes of patriarchy, guilt and sacrifice are interestingly portrayed but sometimes I felt like there could’ve been more. And definitely more deadly Slievi!!

I’m frustrated that Slievi is still being held captive by her brother, who seems determined to sell her or hand her over to their enemies. I really wish she was stronger and more capable of fighting back and taking revenge against the people who have made her life unbearable. I hope she eventually finds the strength to take control of her own fate and make them pay. “I know I would.”

After a violent episode in which she hurt someone from her village, Slievy is hidden away by her brother, Tyler (more likely tied up). As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that she may be the key to humanity’s future, as she appears immune to the disease affecting the region. Even more remarkable, she is the mother of two cubs with the rare ability to heal—but only a handful of people know this secret.

Slievi is introduced as being chained while facing accusations of having destroyed an entire village, leading her brother to punish her for this.
