Well, it does seem to be smoothing out and picking up. That's good.

Not an auspicious start. Already we've had a 1st ch. that would be better termed a prologue, a lengthy flashback, reminiscing about a friend and an info-dump. I'm still waiting for more than about a page of actual story (and I'm not exaggerating).

If not for previous reviewers who promise it takes a few chapters to settle, I'd be considering a DNF.

I really hope it's not all written in this style.
