"What began as a single-issue, anti-EU rebellion has grown into a potent force by consolidating voters who say 'no' 3 times: no to Brussels; no to political elites in Westminster; & no to immigration. The Eurosceptic core of this 'Brussels-plus' message is also more than a means to recruit voters. It provides the party with a coherent ideological core...UKIP can also ...

"Europe's radical right revolt has been...driven by older, poorly educated & financially insecure voters yearning to restore the 'good old times', which in their eyes were defined by greater respect for authority, traditional gender roles & assertive nationalism. At the heart of this counter-revolution is a deep-seated gloom about the fallen state of society, & a distrust of alien & threatening modern values...

UKIP's electorate is 57% male while the BNP's is even more male dominated (64%)...several factors are likely to play a role...that the socially conservative, chauvinistic & anti-egalitarian ideas of the radical right may put off women who are otherwise sympathetic to these parties...in the course of only a few months in 2013, the UKIP treasurer suggested women should not be promoted to company boards, a major donor

Odd book.
If I take what they say about working class/ Blue collar voters disconnected from political parties and ripe to be sucked up by a new right wing political party then judging by electoral results since publication one has to conclude that faced with an open goal they failed to get the ball across the line. In which case this isn't a book about that explains the support for a right wing party but a book...

although published in 2014 this looks like a book already undone by time, for instance they write of the infighting within UKIP 'authoritarian' leader vs rebellous membership as something which was overcome, but if so from the longer (!) perspective of 2018 it seems actually that conflict is key to something that was fundamental about the party (assuming that it can survive as some kind of electoral presence)

only on page 7 & I'm already put off by the choice of words eg a million britons voting for the BNP "despite the party's known sympathies for white supremacism, anti-Semitism & violence" while I know all those things are bad and everybody is meant to dislike them it seems rather naive to assume that among a million people there weren't some at least who for them because not despite such views.
