really? All the time he felt nothing when he thought the girl was a guy and didn't bother when "he" left. And now he cannot live without her? Yeah right.

This story about a girl who promises to marry who gets her father home and the horse hears it sounds very familiar.

Holy shit, this guy is so insecure and so sexist he thinks someone will come along and take his wife and he puts her in a magical bottle and the wife is totally fine with it. He did not even ask her.

Transforming into all sorts of things really seems to be a thing of dark magic users. At least it appears more frequently here than among the immortals.

Wow, these hell servants must be really stupid if all you need is clothes and they cannot realize their king is an imposter.

Threatening the slave with violence, a classic. And apparently the football was a fish bladder.

One of the immortals was allegedly a white bat who had transformed into a human? That is unusual.

KingMu of Zhou, the times of these fairy tales are kind of all over the place, aren't they? Were they really heard by the commoners at the time that this book was written?

And what was the moral of this story? Believe some crazy guy talking about immortality even though he obviously dies because he will come back as an immortal anyway?

This element of animals talking about secret cures for people reminds me of the Brother's Grimm, just that here a tiger, wolf and monkey talk, with the Grimms it is more likely ravens or other birds.

The way this remaining dragon is described, is really reminiscent of a chinese alligator.

The fish being the son of the dragon king is familiar, where did I read that before? And the princess being kidnapped by an imposter also sounds familiar.

So the lotus flower was the end of the tongue of a snake. And oh boy the next story ends brutally, the two girls cook the wolf and fox alive.

The bird Rokh... I guess this refers to a big bird in chinese folklore and the name Rokh was used for convenience. And the story about the fisherman and his wife reminds me of a similar story by the Brother's Grimm, except that here there is a magic cave etc but both have it that the wife cannot get enough. And his magic staff turned into a green dragon? That is new. And after death the couple turned into birds.

Well, not surprising that the emperor is such an asshole. And look, the Mulan story is here as well. Kind of odd how the story first says Khan and later emperor. And I do wonder, if this story was from before footbinding was abolished, did anyone ever wonder how Mulan could have passed for a man with her bound feet?

I am not surprised that the snake was a dragonprince after all. They are often associated with dragons. And did the girl get reborn as a maina bird or did she literally transform into one after her death?

Claiming the southwest of "China" is full of black magic is a claim I came across before. Just like the monstrous bird described here or the parents being able to transform. Because the region is considered periphery.
