The plot is interesting and I can see how Piper became a name in Sci Fi. There are just a lot of bits where it becomes apparent that this was written in the late 50s or early 60s.

Mom and sister can't be trusted to act logically because that's just not how women folk work but Sylvie is *different* and that makes mom not like her.
