An amazing and beautiful book. Triumphs and tragedies, lovely family scenes, medical stories-not like any I've read before-and I've read a few medical memoirs. Wonderful.

Vladimir still keeps trying. he didn't give up on her! So sweet how he asks if she will be his girl and tells her he loves her. Cows hoof soup! Even though I had to pause reading this as I beta read a book in between which had to be done to a deadline-I never lost the thread or the enthusiasm for this book. Wonderful. At quite a beautiful bit now where Andrea finds out some news.

She has a few girls call on her who ask for her help to go to school. Their parents can't afford. One does sewing/embroidery which Andrea buys and sells and the other makes Jewellery. Andrea's mum sells some of the sewing and Jewellery. Finally had her paperwork and they were having an official opening of the new Health Centre. Andrea gets gifts from the villagers she sees in surgery eg milk from their cows, eggs.

Delays yet again getting her documentation-full registration as a doctor in Ecuador. Relationship with Vladimir developing, not common knowledge but a colleague has noticed. He reminded her that Latin men are renowned for their infidelity. She did have doubts them and told Vladimir that perhaps best not to continue.

She's going to an Ecuadorean wedding-one of her patients. Last minute invitation which she says is typical of there. Different sort of wedding cake to ours. Went to fair with Vladimir, rides etc. Relationship with Vladimir developing, not common knowledge but a colleague has noticed. He reminded her that Latin men are renowned for their infidelity.

Some more tragic and devastating cases. Learning about the cultures and traditions-eg Day of the Dead, Colanda Morada, bread rolls shaped like a child. Dedicated and hard working doctor, some of the cases are absolutely the worst things. So many ups and downs to her helping people.

Going to see more cars, helping more people, some where they have made a real difference. She's just had her thirtieth birthday and is still single but would love someone to share things with and have a family.

Ash Wednesday-people walk around with ash on their foreheads? Aida who has epilepsy hasn't seen a doctor in years-they just buy her medicines-Andrea finds that the dose is too small for her now she is older. Aida's Aunt says if they haven't got the money for the tablets, they don't get them anyway, so not only too small a dose-sometimes no medication at all.

Ninety year old man, advanced Parkinson's disease. No longer able to walk. He sat on something akin to a skateboard and got around on that. Witchdoctor?!

That's awful-a boy with cerebral palsy, been offered a place at a school for disabled children but they aren't going to let him attend as they prefer to take him on the streets in his wheelchair so that they can beg for money. They saw no sense in educating him when he was a valuable source of income for them. Eye opening-this you just never think of. There's just so much in this book!

The people have no money to pay for the medicines required. Very simple remedies for these conditions. If you've enjoyed books such as confessions of a GP, then this is for you, but it's on a totally different level.

Case of a fifty year old woman with diabetes who isn't on any treatment at all apart from using a plant which they call insulin? Very powerful and affecting to see some of these cases. Terrible things you read in here. And my mind is reeling reading about all these sad cases. All things that are easily sort-out-able in our region.

Conditions there, the things they have to do which we take for granted Eg like the women wash clothes in the river. Here they seem to think get an injection for everything. when it's not necessary Eg for a cold. Going round with health questionnaires, round the village, seeing what sort of help they need. Dodging fierce family pets etc.

Lots of stories which tug at her heart strings so she just wants to help as many as she can, however, she falls prey to a con man who she gives money to for his sick father for op them he comes back, later it becomes apparent he was lying just to extract money out of her.

Then we have this new mother's story. Now the children and her-husband abandoned her three weeks ago, left in remote shack with no money-no money for when she went into Labour so had to walk two miles to get to help at Andrea's. Montserrat tells her this happens all too often, men like to be macho and soon get other women and get tired of providing for wife and kids.

Tragic-Victor-orphan from mother with AIDS, Tuberculosis and syphilis. Very quick and easy to read-despite being a doctor, this book isn't loaded with any complicated terms. Couldn't pay anything with her debit card, no direct debits-it's cash only here! And still waiting for correct work permit.
