this is a horrible book to read when you are hungry. Been staring at the pantry for the last 15 minutes in despair. I mean, compared to the wonderful food being described, week-old bagels and half a bowl of crushed salt&vinegar chips just isn't going to cut the craving.

Hmm.

Things improve now that we are past backstory. Protag doesn't know much about pairing wine with food which seems like a surprising failing for a chef.

Whoever edited this book for grammar does not understand comma rule #1: a comma separates two *independent* clauses joined by a conjunction. Maybe it's the independent clause that isn't understood. The excessive inappropriate commas are distracting. (Showing just how compelling the book is not)

The blurb communicated this backstory info dump much more succinctly.
