"Someone was watching. Watching, not standing lamenting, and dreaming. I never thought of watching, thought Peter, and if he had, it would have seemed to him something remote from himself, old-fashioned, superstitious; but now he knew it was like China Court itself, fitting and faithful."

the whole description of finding The Book was remarkably tedious - Godden in her writing for children mode - the tension deliberate of perhaps someone has taken in - and of course only the faithful Cecily knows where it is.

The will is read - completely as expected. I think the point is will Tracy be deflected from her true path - by the manipulative and abusive others - lead by Walter - with his financial dampers - are they even correct? It's really a tale of will the good - Peter and Tracy be swallowed by the avarice and covetousness of the greedy ones - quite biblical in its structure.

The wonderful section with Eliza and Jeremy Baxter - a fellow of Trinity College - studied Early Christian and Medieval Literature - can read Latin, Greek, - Anglo-Saxon and Old French. This makes me laugh because they are the languages Marie de France would have known and understood when she was writing her Lais. Several copies in my Currently Reading - including Old French. I love the serendipities of books !
