This book is doing way too much between the various plot elements and the romance. And while it makes it feel like the story is fast-paced, it also gives it a messy quality.

At this stage, either the conflict is resolved brilliantly or its a deus ex machina.

I'm kind of confused by the pacing of this book.

It feels like it is trying to do too much at once, only halfway resolving one thread before grabbing another, giving the whole thing an undercooked quality to it.

I am enjoying the fantasy aspect of it but the romance part feels a bit rushed and slap dashed, as if the author has a checklist for certain milestones without proper development to get there.

This is turning out to be way way more fantasy than historical romance by any stretch of the imagination just by sheer volume of events involving magic so far. Not that it doesn't still have all the classic hallmarks of a bog-standard romance.

Is it romantasy? Depends on how you class romantasies.

It's about time I tackle another free ebook off my vast unread collection of them. This one is for a monthly keyword reading challenge and the excuse I needed to get it stricken.
