The book is good but i don’t think it’s for me. The stories aren’t that interesting to keep me going

"The Lawman" é um western baseado na vida de Bass Reeves, o primeiro "marshal" negro dos EUA. O conto é composto por episódios rápidos da vida dele e, por causa dessa brevidade, perde a força no que poderia ser uma história interessante se o autor tivesse escolhido apenas um episódio.

“You motherfuckers deaf or something?”
Jaguar felt a surge of adrenaline rush to his brain, while Shep merely laughed. Pretending to be oblivious to the threatening presence lurking behind his shoulder, Shep ordered his other scotch. He turned around and stared the giant straight in the eyes.

“Better to die a free man than live in thrall to a demon.”
The irony of Salazar’s declaration was not lost on Ngola. In many places, the Portuguese slaver himself was cursed as a demonic entity. p. 182

"Didn’t they teach you that at colored ‘pilot’ training? You were waved off twice. What were you dreaming about up there—Jackie Robinson and Roy Campanella double-screwing your sister?” He spied Rocket’s silk scarf, white and fluffed as a cloud. “And the hell do think you are, god-damned Cab Calloway?”

And so this collection speaks to us with great power...
I am more than happy to read about the history and psychology of oppression, the disenfranchisement of our culture and the overwhelming power of capital – but these revelations are poor fare if I cannot also imagine a different world and a different life where the chains of the modern world can be shrugged.
