3 stars bc it wasn’t bad but it wasn’t great. I skimmed a little bit of it bc of the last two chapters but I’m counting it bc it does in fact count as reading it and helps for my other history reading stuff

Read this for history 355. I liked the first two chapters and learned a lot about the Columbia river. The last two chapters lost me. The discussion in class pulled out a lot of the issues this book has and how White completely shifts from a cultural and environmental history to political and law history. He focused too much on the machine and not enough on the organic which sells him short and takes away fromthepoint

The depression progressives had it correct though. It’s so interesting how our ideas about human molding nature have basically flipped in the last century and a half, and the lasting impacts of Emersonian ideas!!!
