Two chapters on diagrammatic note-taking, first for reading and then for lectures. I remember in university, being able to hold in my mind long banks of the prof's previous points while I handwrote summarized notes. Having fallen out of practice, I'm not sure I could do that again. This technique looks even more direct and like it could get information down faster, requiring less intense suspensions in my mind.

Since the book asks you to return after trying the superskim, I did it. I failed: it may require an energy level I didn't have at the beginning of my reading session. Then I reread it normally (including my linear speed improvements), and it explains how the low-res layers come together, and where actual reading fits in. It truthfully tells you how little comprehension the skim starts you with. No controversy here.

The beginning of Chapter 4 exposits what I'd been thinking: the highest speeds of the course are methods for time management through layering several low res readings. It's asking me to do an exercise that I'm not ready for yet, covering the page in an unusual visual order. At the moment, I'm happy with the improved linear subvocalizing speed that I've just achieved. I might skip ahead to the writing and notes advice

Yes, I've decided to actually go through the book this time. And yes, at this stage it is genuinely helping. It explains techniques for mild improvement before getting into the surprisingly fast methods, as well as what the techniques are for. "Debunking" videos misrepresent what people considering speed reading want (they disrespect their own audience!) as well as the suite of strategies.
