Status Updates From This Perfect Day

It’s giving boomer but I also kinda agree

I feel like I'm reading a data sheet. I thought surely this isn't Levin, ran to the reviews and see three friends, one in the DNF column, also struggling with the 'Hello, is this Levin?" thoughts. Perhaps his body was hijacked for a few months for this one.

Not Ira Levin's best book, but still pretty decent and a lot of pages still read so you never know.

““What is?” Chip said. “What the hate is this? Who are they?” Laughing, Dover said, “They’re the programmers, Chip! And that’s what you’re going to be!”

“Four fifths of the island’s population is descended from the families who were here before the Unification or who came here right after; they’re inbred, ignorant, mean, self-satisfied—and they despise immigrants.”🤔

“Pre-U members,” he said, “gave up efficiency—in exchange for freedom. And we’ve done the reverse.” “We haven’t done it,” Lilac said. “It was done for us.”

“What do you mean?” he said. “That anyone who wants children—should be allowed to have them?”

Nothing says “of its time” like an explicit rape scene followed by the victim declaring there’s no need to apologize 😬

I am overall enjoying the book, but this is part of the value in exploring art of the past, not just the cheery depictions of the era by people who remember it fondly. The good old days were garbage! We don’t want them back!

The great SF of the first half just started to take a
downward spiral ⤹಄ (｡Ó﹏Ò｡).

The influence of Aldous Huxley's Brave New World and George Orwell's 1984 shines luminously in this 1970 version of a dystopian future!
